“Algorithmic radicalization” is the idea that algorithms used by large tech, and social media companies are pushing people down digital rabbit holes and studying personal internet activity. These algorithms control what we see and when we see it, and learn from our past activities, and we slowly and subconsciously start to think like the rabbit hole that we’ve been pushed down. This idea of “Big Brother” seeing inside your head, reminded me of my time growing up in the Catholic church, when I believed that a higher power could read my thoughts and use them against me. The church’s use of uniforms in their schools and on their priests to symbolize a group mindset, inspired the idea for the silhouettes to be inspired by athletic and school uniforms. The materiality is hand embroidery, a time consuming, manual technique, to create original images inspired by stained glass windows and mosaics. This contrasts with the digital themes and concepts that I’m exploring, and pulling from other inspirations such as, AI generated Art, Surrealism, George Orwell’s “1984,” Sci-fi films and TV, uniformity, and my own personal experiences from 10 years of using Social Media platforms. I want to make a commentary on how much of a hold these addictive algorithms have on our minds, and the cult-like behavior that surrounds social media by designing a “uniform” and “stained glass windows,” for the “church of social media.”
